Classic dinner rolls

I’ve never thought of myself as much of a baker but lately I’ve been having the urge to incorporate baking into my weekend plans. There’s something about making fresh baked goods on the weekend that feels super relaxing and cozy. I’ve been experimenting with using yeast and I must say it’s such a cool process seeing the dough proof and transform.
If you’ve visited on my Instagram page, I recently made pumpkin dinner rolls. They were a huge hit and many of you sent me a message saying how delicious they were! I was so happy to hear that you love them as much as I do! While working on my Holiday Bites series, I knew I had to include a classic dinner roll recipe. What Holiday table is complete without warm, fluffy dinner rolls? Dinner rolls are a classic Holiday recipe, and they are equally enjoyable to make as they are to eat. You will love how easy these are to make! They make the perfect addition to your Holiday dinner table.

classic dinner rolls
Prep time: 3 hours
Cook time: 20-25 minutes
Total time: 3 hours 30 minutes
Serving: 11-12 rolls
Ingredients
- 1 cup whole milk, 110° F
- 2 + 1/4 tsp dry active yeast
- 2 tbsp sugar, divided
- 1/4 cup (4 tbsp) melted unsalted butter
- 1 egg, room temperature
- 1 tsp salt
- 3 cups flour + 2 tbsp (if the dough is too sticky)
Directions
- Make the dough. In a small saucepan, add the milk and slowly heat until the temperature reaches 105-110° F, not scorching hot (this will kill the yeast when you add it). Add the yeast and sugar. Whisk to combine. Add the yeast mixture to the bowl of a stand mixer and let activate for 10 minutes. Melt the butter on the stove and let cool. After 10 minutes, add the butter, egg and salt. Mix to combine. On low speed using the dough hook, add in 1 cup of flour, mix to combine. Add the rest of the flour and mix, scraping down the sides of the bowl as needed.
- Knead the dough. Knead the dough in the mixer (or by hand) for 5-8 minutes until the dough forms and pulls away from the sides of the bowl. After kneading, the dough should be soft and should bounce back when you poke your finger in it. If the dough is too sticky add 1 tbsp of flour. You don’t want to add too much flour, or the dough will become dense.
- Let the dough rise. Lightly grease a large bowl with a neutral oil. Place the dough in the bowl and cover with a clean kitchen towel. Let the dough rest for 2 hours or once it’s double in size.
- Shape the dough. Grease a 9×13-inch baking dish. Punch the dough down to release the air. Transfer the dough to a clean, floured surface. Divide the dough into 11-12 equal balls. Gently shape them into a ball shape. Place them in the baking dish.
- Let the rolls rise. Cover the rolls with a clean kitchen towel and allow to rise until double in size for 1 hour.
- Preheat the oven to 350° F and bake for 20-25 minutes. When the rolls come out of the oven, brush with melted butter and sprinkle with flaky salt.
Notes
- The dinner rolls can be baked in advance. Once they have cooled you can freeze them. When you are ready to eat, take them out of the freezer to thaw. Warm them in the oven on a low setting and serve with butter.
