Growing up my mom always made her BBQ sauce from scratch; she never bought it from the store. She used a recipe from my dad’s mom, and she has been making it for years. Now like my mother, I also make my BBQ sauce at home and I never buy it from the store. BBQ from the store can contain many unhealthy ingredients like seed oils, corn syrups, sugars and natural flavors. My BBQ sauce recipe uses a handful of ingredients that you probably already have in your pantry. You can make this with your favorite store-bought ketchup but to reduce the amount of sugar, I like to use my homemade ketchup which is extremely easy to make and taste delicious! I like to freeze my ketchup in batches because I don’t use a lot of ketchup and this way the ketchup will last longer. This BBQ sauce is so easy to make, and I hope you enjoy it as much as I do.

Prep time: 10 minutes

Cook time: 20 minutes

Total time: 30 minutes

Servings: 2 cups

Ingredients

  • ½ small white onion, finely minced
  • 1 garlic clove, minced
  • 1 ½ cups homemade ketchup or your favorite store-bought ketchup
  • 8 dashes Worcestershire
  • 4 dashes tobasco
  • 4 tbsp brown sugar or honey
  • ½ cup water
  • 2 tbsp Dijon mustard or yellow mustard
  • ½ tsp smoked paprika
  • ½tsp garlic powder
  • ½ cup white distilled vinegar (only add this if you are using a store-bought ketchup)
  • salt to taste

Directions

  1. Heat a medium sized sauce pan to medium-low heat. Add a drizzle of olive oil to the pan. Once hot, add the onion. Sauté the onion until it becomes translucent and is fragrant. Add the garlic and cook until fragrant. This should take less than a minute.
  2. Add the ketchup, Worcestershire, tobasco, brown sugar, water, mustard and spices. Cook on low for 20 minutes, stirring every few minutes.

Notes

  1. The BBQ sauce will last in the fridge for up to two weeks.
  2. If you make a double batch, the sauce freezes well
  3. If you are using a store bought ketchup, add the vinegar. If you are using my homemade ketchup recipe, you won’t need any vinegar because the ketchup already has a tang.
